Pathways to Belonging Training

Pathways to Belonging is designed for professionals at all stages of their IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility) journey. It includes a six-module, self-paced program paired with facilitated practical sessions. This certification program deepens reflection, builds confidence, and reinforces IDEA-aligned practices across the recreation, parks and physical activity sector.

Developed in partnership with the BC Alliance for Healthy Living and supported by the Province of British Columbia.

Pathways to Belonging offers six flexible modules, allowing professionals to choose the path that best fits their IDEA journey. Participants build confidence, deepen reflection, and apply inclusive practices across their work.

Per Person

Member pricing starts at $40/module. Non-member pricing is $50/module. Package bundles include all six online modules for the price of five.

Facilitated sessions (up to 20 participants):

Course Outline

Module 1| Introduction to IDEA

  • Define IDEA in the context of recreation, physical activity, and parks services.
  • Understand how systemic barriers impact access and belonging.
  • Reflect on your own role in supporting inclusion and equity.
  • Identify where IDEA shows up and where it doesn’t in your work.
  • Start using a systems lens to spot and close inclusion gaps.

Module 2| Inclusive Programming and Language

  • Recognize how current programming or communication practices may unintentionally exclude some populations.
  • Apply inclusive language practices across signage, marketing, and program materials.
  • Use multilingual and accessible formats in your outreach.
  • Begin applying co-design principles by developing programs with communities, not just for them.

Module 3| Equity-Centred Practices

  • Clearly distinguish between equality and equity.
  • Analyze policies and strategies for unintended barriers or bias.
  • Apply the principles of Equity-Centred Design to your work.
  • Learn ways to meaningfully engage communities most impacted by inequities.

Module 4| Bridging the Gap: Engaging Underrepresented Communities

  • Identify participation barriers experienced by underrepresented communities. 
  • Engage with community organizations and leaders in ways that build trust and reciprocity. 
  • Use trauma-informed, culturally responsive approaches to co-design programs. 
  • Strengthen collaboration across sectors, especially when resources differ between urban and rural contexts. 

Module 5| Measuring Inclusion: Evaluating IDEA Impact & Progress

  • Describe why measuring inclusion matters. 
  • Introduce measurement and evaluation frameworks for inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility. 
  • Define clear inclusion, equity, and accessibility outcomes.
  • Discuss collection and analysis of quantitative and qualitative data. 
  • Explore practical approaches to track whether programs and policies are equitable and welcoming. Present tools to make IDEA principles measurable and actionable. 
  • Increase understanding of how to build organizational accountability through transparent progress reporting. 

Module 6| Understanding Accessibility Beyond Physical Spaces

  • Build understanding of accessibility as a multi-dimensional concept. 
  • Differentiate social, cultural, physical, and systemic barriers to participation. 
  • Discuss inclusive service-delivery approaches (policies, communication, program design). 
  • Explore how to adapt programs and facilities to meet diverse needs. 
  • Describe actionable steps to strengthen accessibility in various recreation contexts.
